Protect Your Eyes from the Sun.

The American Academy of Ophthamalogy (AAO) reports that, each year, there are more than 1 million eye injuries in the US, 90% of which are preventable with certain safety precautions.

The AAO reports that long-term exposure to ultraviolet light as it reflects off sand and pavement can temporarily burn the eye surface. Long term exposure to ultraviolet radiation may lead to age-related macular degeneration and cataracts: both of which are major causes of visual impairment and blindness in the elderly.

The Academy suggests the following tips for protecting your eyes from the sun:

*Be sure your sunglasses block at least 99% of UVA and UVB rays.

*Wear goggles when swimming underwater, and encourage your children to do the same.

*Chlorine from pool water can irritate your eyes, and bacteria and lakes and ponds would be best staying out of your eyes in the first place.

*Remind your children never to look or stare directly into the sun.

*If you or your child have any eye discomfort, discharge, or unexplained changes, be sure to seek medical help immediately.
