The 5 essentials for good sun protection.
When you are thinking about spending time outdoors, you want to be sure that you, and your family, are well protected from the sun. There are five main essentials for good sun protection:
First: A good quality, high SPF sunscreen. If you play in the ocean or pool, be sure to use a waterproof brand and reapply regularly. Some of the newer formulations also provide anti-mosquito properties, which can be helpful if you are in the forest or woods.
Second: Sun-blocking clothing and hats. These should be large enough to cover your face and body from the rays of the sun. A 3" brim on your hat is optimal. Wearing dark, tightly woven garments (like jeans) will keep out more sun than light, loose ones (like linen pants).
Third: A good facial moisturizer with SPF. Your face is one of the most delicate parts of your body, and among the first to show sun damage. You can slow or prevent this by using facial moisturizer.
Fourth: A good quality lip balm, SPF 15 or higher. Keep your lips well hydrated and keep them from drying out.
Fifth: Finally, a good pair of sunglasses- look for ones that have lenses large enough to cover the skin around the eyes and which block at least 99% of UVA/UVB rays. If you use these for driving, make sure they offer you a clear view.
