New Sunscreen May Prevent Skin Cancer

The Journal of Investigative Dermatology recently published information on research being completed at Bath University in the United Kingdom which may change the impact of sunscreen forever.

You know that sunscreen is important to prevent excessive exposure to the sun, which may lead to skin cancer. But what about a sunscreen that actively repairs skin and prevents skin cancer?

Conventional sunscreens merely filter out UVA and UVB sunlight. This new ingredient actually reduces the pain and inflammation of sunburn, and prevents the creation and build-up of free radicals which are associated with the development of skin cancers.

The new ingredient is responsive to light and only activates when exposed to UV radiation. Its function is based on the fact that skin releases massive amounts of free iron when exposed to high doses of sunlight. This roaming free iron can cause the creation of more harmful free radicals which can lead to severe skin damage and accelerated aging.

This new ingredient consistes of chelators which soak up the iron and remove it from circulation. Long term use of chelators can be toxic, so the researchers have spent years trying to find the perfect chelator: one that is strong enough to pull the iron out of the cells, without damaging other essential cell processes.

This new type of sunscreen will be more effective and will last longer than current products. It is about three years away from being released commercially.

Watch for it.
