FDA Approves New Sunscreen.
On July 24, 2006, the FDA proved that there is something new under the sun(screen) as they approved Anthelios SX, a new sunscreen made by L'Oreal.
Anthelios SX is designed to prevent sunburn and protect against UVB and UVA rays. It has an SPF (sun protection factor) of 15.
Anthelios SX contains three active ingredients, one of which, Ecamsule, is new to the US market.
Ecamsule has been marketed in Canada and Europe since 1993, under the name Mexoryl SX.
28 studies of more than 2000 patients showed that side effects of Anthelios SX were mild and rare. Most commonly, users experienced dry skin, eczema, itching, acne, dermatitis, skin discomfort, and sunburn.
While Anthelios SX shows promise as a new form of sun protection, researchers continue to recommend a combined strategy of protective clothing, limited exposure and use of sunscreen as a multipronged approach to prevent skin damage from the sun.
